125 Facts: Edna Gladney's fundraising abilities

Mrs. Gladney proved her fundraising acumen when she opened the Sherman Nursery in Sherman, TX. Among other things, she collected change in milk bottles that were placed in stores around Sherman (an idea she learned from I.Z.T. Morris). She later repeated that practice in Fort Worth on behalf of the Texas Children's Home and Aid Society.

Edna's passionate support of the birth certificate legislation and her assertion that "there are no illegitimate children, only illegitimate parents" led many Texas legislators to refer to her as "that Gladney woman." Thanks to her efforts Texas passed a bill in 1936 and became the first state in the Southwest to legally remove the stigma of illegitimacy from birth records.
