Introduction

The Gladney Center for Adoption originated in 1887. For over a century, Gladney handled only domestic adoption in the United States. In 1994, Gladney started an international adoption program with China. Since then, Gladney has added several other international adoption programs and currently is working to place children from a total of 9 countries, Ethiopia being its newest. Gladney's Ethiopia program received its licensing in 2005 G.C./1998 E.C. and had its first placement in February 2006 G.C./Yekatit 1998 E.C. Since then, Gladney has placed 52 children, 28 females and 24 males.

Gladney operates 2 foster care centers for referred children. One houses infants and the other houses children ages 2-11 years old. When hiring caregivers for the foster care centers, Gladney goes first to Kechene Children's Home to interview young women who have completed school and need employment. 19 of the 32 foster care center caregivers were hired by Gladney from Kechene Children's Home.

Humanitarian Aid Contributions

Kebebetsehay Children's Home

  • Gladney hired 4 laundry workers, Cost : $117 (1050 ETB)/month, Total thus far: $2,106 (18,954 ETB) and has continuously employed them at Kebebetsehay since February 2006 G.C./Yekatit 1998 E.C. Gladney also supplied the orphanage with two washing machines, Total Cost: $656 (5900 ETB).
  • Gladney paid for the architectural proposal, Total Cost $444 (4000 ETB), for Kebebetsehay's new building project for a 1-story residence.
  • Gladney conducted a one-week training workshop for the caregivers of Kebebetsehay and Kechene on the issues of HIV positive children, psychological issues of children, and infant care and routines, Total Cost: $1800 (16,200 ETB), Kebebetsehay's share $900 (8,100 ETB).
  • Gladney handled medical care and donated medical expenses for 3 infants from Kebebetsehay: Tamerua, $1,841 (16,569 ETB); Tsion, $506 (4,552 ETB); and Kirubel, currently in Gladney's care, total thus far $389 (3500 ETB).
Total Contributions for Kebebetsehay: $6,842 (61,575 ETB)

Kechene Children's Home

  • Gladney gave 4 computers to the orphanage, Total Cost: $1,721 (15, 489 ETB).
  • Gladney gave textbooks for all grade levels, Total Cost: $1,800 (16,200 ETB).
  • Gladney conducted a one-week training workshop for the caregivers of Kebebetsehay and Kechene on the issues of HIV positive children, psychological issues of children, and infant care and routines, Total Cost: $1800 (16,200 ETB), Kechene's share $900 (8,100 ETB).
  • Gladney helped to start and continues to support the Kechene Association, an employment network and opportunity association for women who have transitioned out of Kechene Children's Home. The association was started out of Gladney's concern for a large group of women who were transitioning out of Kechene Children's Home to have the support they needed to find employment and opportunity so they would stay away from harmful lifestyles. The association is run by the women themselves and is very close to receiving its license. Total Cost: $1,111 (10,000 ETB).

Kolfe Youth Center

  • Gladney provided transportation costs for Kolfe boys to attend various trainings, Total Cost: $278 (2,500 ETB).
  • Gladney contributed $222 (2,000 ETB) to other private donations totaling $889 ($8,000 ETB) to provide new prosthetics for several young men at Kolfe.

Enat Alem Orphanage

  • Capacity Building of Orphanage, Total Cost: $7,647 (68,823 ETB).
Berhane Hiwot Orphanage
  • Capacity Building of Orphanage, Total Cost: $2,269 (20,421 ETB).
  • Six-month sponsorships for impoverished or orphaned children in community. 10 children in Addis, 5 children outside of Addis. Cost per child: $13/month (120 ETB/month); Total Cost: $1170 (10,800 ETB).
  • Gladney assisted with cost of care for children referred to Gladney $1,660 (14,940 ETB).
Total Contributions for Berhane Hiwot: $5,099 (46,161 ETB)

Almaz Orphanage - located in Nazareth
Capacity building of orphanage to rent a new building, furnish the building and hire more caregivers. Cost: $1,000/month for 12 months. Total cost: $12,000.

Childern and Youth Circus Association
Weekly circus performances put on by street kids and kids that come from underprivileged families, to give them an outlet for activity and a way to raise money.

  • Provided keyboard synthesizer and sound system for their show. Total Cost: $1,044 (9400 ETB).
Center for Protection against Gender Abuse
A safe house that accepts physically abused and/or raped women for care and training. Donation $2,222 (20,000 ETB).

Conclusion
Starting in September, Gladney intends to continue many of these aid projects and to add additional ones including a sponsorship program supporting 100 children with $17/month (150 ETB/month) for a total of $1,667/month (15,000 ETB/month), and a renovation project at Kolfe Youth Center, estimated cost $13,000 (117,000 ETB) to turn an unused building into a cafeteria and library/study hall.
